Poetry Lives

Yesterday's poetry posting invoked some interest. Many consider poetry to be a medium that has little if any contemporary significance and other than the writings of Dr. Seuss, young people are receiving less and less exposure to poetry except as an often unwelcome right of academic passage.

Research by The Poetry Foundation shows that "people who read (poetry) are more connected with life and culture than those who do not. They socialize with family and friends and volunteer in their communities more frequently than do non-readers, and they participate in leisure activities—listening to music, exercising, and attending cultural events—at significantly higher rates."

The poetry archive that I have linked to (click on the title above) offers an insight into the world of poetry for all ages. If you have a young child that falls asleep each night watching television, consider reading them a poem instead! (Indeed, you might try it yourself as an alternative to Law & Order)
