Holy Spirit Preparatory School Named One of America’s Top 50 Catholic High Schools – 2007, 2008 / 2009 & 2010

(ATLANTA, October 15, 2010)   Holy Spirit Preparatory School was named one of America's top 50 Catholic secondary schools by the National Catholic High School Honor Roll  for the third time. The award which was originally conferred annually was moved to a two year award cycle in 2008.  The purpose of the Honor Roll is to recognize and encourage excellence in Catholic secondary education.  It is a critical resource for parents and educators that distinguishes those schools that excel in three categories:  academic excellence, Catholic identity, and civic education.

"We are proud to once again be recognized as one of the top 50 Catholic high schools in America,” said Holy Spirit Prep President Gareth N. Genner. “Our community of parents, staff and students makes this is a special place for all of us. We thank the Catholic High School Honor Roll for this distinction and look forward to continuing to build a legacy of academic excellence and Catholic faith formation"

In its seven years, the Honor Roll has seen over 50 percent of America’s nearly 1,300 Catholic high schools participate at least once.  The best schools demonstrate a balanced excellence, which includes an active Catholic culture, sound college preparation and integration of Church teaching in all departments.  These schools also display sound moral, catechetical and civic formation that prepares students for vocations in the world as political, religious, scientific, and business leaders.

“Holy Spirit Preparatory School continues to be recognized for their outstanding faith-based education which they provide to their students,” said Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory.  “I congratulate HSP for once again being recognized as one of the top 50 Catholic High Schools in the United States for the third consecutive year.”

The Catholic High School Honor Roll is an independent project of the Acton Institute, an international research and educational organization.  It is produced in consultation with an advisory board comprised of Catholic college presidents and noted Catholic scholars from the University of Notre Dame, Catholic University of America, Gonzaga University, Franciscan University of Steubenville,  Pontifical College Josephinum, University of Tulsa, DeSales University, Christendom College and Creighton University.
Advisory board member Very Rev. David M. O’Connell, President of Catholic University of America, said the Honor Roll’s evaluation method is indispensable.  “Catholic schools must examine themselves on a regular basis using a well-rounded approach that assesses adherence to the Church’s educational calling,” he said. “The Honor Roll strengthens schools by encouraging high standards and vibrant Catholicism.”
“I extend congratulations to the entire Holy Spirit High School community for once again being recognized as one of the top 50 Catholic High Schools in this nation,” said Diane Starkovich, Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Atlanta.  “Having achieved this distinction for the third year in a row affirms the school’s efforts toward continually evaluating and improving Holy Spirit’s academic programs, its civic education and its Catholic identity.  The school community should be very proud of this recognition of excellence in Catholic education.”

In September 2009 Holy Spirit Preparatory School was awarded the National Blue Ribbon for Academic Excellence.  Sandy Springs Mayor Eva Galambos who announced the Blue Ribbon award to the school and community acknowledged this most recent award, “Sandy Springs is fortunate to have in its community Holy Spirit Preparatory School which has just been listed again among the Top 50 Catholic High Schools in America.  The students who attend Holy Spirit Prep are fortunate to obtain traditional and rigorous academic preparation.  I congratulate the faculty and the students.”

In addition to its High School which graduated its fifth class in 2010, Holy Spirit Preparatory School offers programs of instructions for students in its Preschool beginning at age 2, and at the Lower School for Kindergarten through 6th grade. Holy Spirit Prep’s Upper School includes a 7th and 8th grade Junior High and a 9th-12th grade High School.

Holy Spirit Preparatory School (www.holyspiritprep.org) was founded in 1996.  It is an independent, coeducational, Catholic, college-preparatory school serving students from Pre-K2 through high school on three distinct campuses conveniently located inside the Perimeter in Sandy Springs.
