The French scholar Leon Gautier, a noted Catholic medieval historian, set out what he called The 10 commandments governing the conduct of a Knight, these obligations also applied to Ladies. They are as follows:
- Unswerving belief in the Church and obedience to her teachings.
- A willingness to defend the church
- Respect and pity for all weaknesses and steadfastness in defending them.
- Love of country
- Refusal to retreat before the enemy
- Unceasing and merciless war against the infidel
- Strict obedience to the feudal overlord, so long as these duties did not conflict with the duty to God.
- Loyalty to truth and to the pledged word
- Generosity in giving
- Championship of the right and the good, against the forces of evil.
As I research the teaching of Honor and Chivalry to our children I came across a unique and fun summer camp; this camp has such an overlap with our focus on Honor & Chivalry that I am considering our sponsoring a similar summer camp for our lower school students. Any thoughts? Click on the title of this article for more information.
Response to The 10 commandments governing the conduct of a Knight Blog:
Your positive character building philosophy and influence on our children as they strive to excel spiritually, academically, emotionally and socially is greatly appreciated. Encouraging our children to mirror Jesus Christ in their acts of kindness to each other and to those less fortunate, while adhering to the code of chivalry, is an incredible structure and guideline for our children to model.
Holy Spirit is a very special place where the Parents, the School and The Church all working in tandem to build a strong foundation for our children to grow and reach their fullest potential. With these values, efforts, goals and expectations our children are thriving and preparing them to excel in life and meet challenges with confidence and perseverance. Not taking light our vocation as parents, we so appreciate the School embracing and encouraging a three pillar ( parent, school and church) approach.
Holy Spirit has and continues to exceed our expectations in academic growth while encouraging creative, resourceful thinking, while keeping our spirituality and our faith as a center point. We have often heard, “Holy Spirit is the Hidden Jewel of Atlanta”… It is so true.
