Microcosms

My wanderings today took me through both the preschool and the college; what an amazing contrast in sizes between the students but in both places there was an identical joy. If we swapped teachers between the two would the students really notice?     :-)

Have you ever thought about a four-way stop? Last week Barbara narrowly avoided a collision with a teenage driver who was texting while driving at full speed straight past the stop sign. Thanks to God's grace and the Brembo brakes in her little Genesis Coupe she survived with only a scare but a four-way stop relies upon our having faith in other drivers knowing, remembering and following the rules as to the order in which they should proceed.

Why do the vast majority of drivers diligently follow the rules even when there is no effective means of enforcement? How do the drivers that deliberately flout the rules feel after they do so? Are they embarrassed, guilty or proud of their alpha-driving? What do you do if you lose track of who goes next? What do you do if two cars arrive simultaneously? Do you really know? Does your teen-driver know?

I have heard the claim that the character of a person is fully demonstrated on the golf course but for me it is best shown at a four-way stop.
